Influence of planting date and herbicide program on <i>Amaranthus palmeri</i> control in dry bean

Abstract Late-emerging summer annual weeds are difficult to control in dry bean production fields. Dry is a poor competitor with weeds, due its slow rate of growth and delayed canopy formation. Palmer amaranth particularly season-long emergence resistance acetolactate synthase (ALS)-inhibiting herbicides. growers rely on PPI preemergence residual herbicides for the foundation their weed programs; however, postemergence often needed control. The objective this experiment was evaluate effect planting date herbicide program late-season western Nebraska. Field experiments were conducted 2017 2018 near Scottsbluff, NE. arranged split-plot design, as main-plot subplot factors, respectively. Delayed represented by delay 15 d after standard time. treatments EPTC + ethalfluralin, ethalfluralin followed (fb) imazamox bentazon, pendimethalin dimethenamid-P fb resulted lowest density at 3 wk treatment highest yield. bentazon provided did not consistently result biomass reduction compared nontreated In 2018, had reduced treatment, planting. Delaying reduce yield limited benefit improving bean.
